Halloween 2012
Took the broodling on his first Halloween adventure and walked the neighborhood near my parents’ home. It was a fun reminder of our own childhood, and the weather was cooperative enough to not rain on our parade (it was very humid, though; we were sweating in that getup).
A lot of people recognized our outfits, even in the dark. We heard our character names yelled from across the street by kids and adults, and many squee’d at the sight of the kid. That was a proud moment because everything was thought up, cobbled together, or cut out and sewn by Mommy. It meant a job well done, without having to resort to store-bought costumes.
Of course, some people did not get the reference, and actually thought the kid was some kind of sultan. I felt a bit “in-sultan-ed” to wonder what they must have thought of our outfits. Did they think we weren’t in costume? “Oh, maybe they just got home from working at Diamond Head Plumbing!”
He got a decent haul, a mix of healthy snacks like granola bars and oatmeal cookies along with the typical “fun size” candy bars. One house gave him a pencil.
However, he will not be enjoying this bounty, for the mother will be taking everything to her office as part of a “candy donation” program, where her boss will pay $1.00 for each pound submitted. I believe they’re going to give the candy to the Boys & Girls Club.
