Sisters of Battle – Canoness

I know I said that I would focus on completing the Grey Knights miniatures in my possession, but that was after I spent two weeks painting this figure:

Sisters of Battle - HQ

Sisters of Battle - HQ

It’s the commander for that planned Sisters of Battle army of mine, and since this HQ is an independent character, it’s technically a completed squad and thus ready for pictures. I’m still a long ways from even fielding a small force, but I still managed to finish this model. And that’s a step, I figure.

I painted it in the same color scheme as my Grey Knights because I wanted to try and match the look and feel. I’ve already completed a couple of Troop models, but not enough to field on the tabletop. I rather like how the colors turned out, even if I’m not thoroughly satisfied with the highlighting and layering on this Canoness.

I say this model took two weeks because that’s the total number of days between start and finish, but actual painting time was somewhere around 7 or 8 hours. I took an hour out of my home schedule here and there, maybe longer on the weekends if I didn’t have anything to do, but more or less I basically only did a little at a time. I’ve layered more colors on this Canoness than I would regular Sisters, which just added to the time.

This picture was also my first foray into layering on Photoshop Elements. I’ve done layering before on a PC with Paint Shop Pro, but now that I have an iMac, I needed something that wasn’t PC-specific, yet still provided me with a comparable set of tools. It’s still a different kind of workflow, but comfortable enough that it shouldn’t take that long to get comfortable.

Of course, the best way to edit pictures is to just take good ones to begin with.

I’m thinking of changing the format of this site to a two-column layout. I’m in the midst of figuring out what I want and how it should look, but I felt this was enough advance notice that no one should be that surprised if things suddenly look a bit different.
